Wage Protection System (WPS) is created to protect labour rights in United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2009. Dr. Ahmed Al Hashemi shared this information during consultation on the Second High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development held on 27-28 May 2013 in Bangkok.
The WPS is an electronic salary transfer system. All employers have to pay workers through banks, currency exchanges and other financial institutions approved and authorized by the central bank.
The system is developed and implemented by the Ministry of Labour in partnership with Central Bank of the UAE. The WPS covers all sectors and industries workers. If any employers refuse to use the system they will be refused business licenses by Ministry of Labour.
Dr. Hashemi said “The WPS helps to protect the labour rights of workers because it allows the Ministry of Labour to create a database that records wages payments in the private sector to guarantee the timely, efficient and regular payment of wages”.
